Asymmetric inflection in Berber

چکیده
Abstract In Tashlhiyt Berber nouns, grammatical gender is usually expressed on both edges of the noun by segment /t/. However, at right edge, there another, more minor pattern: many grammatically feminine nouns end in a vowel. The regular realization involves final /t/ associated to suffixal CV unit. Vowel-final are derived when stem vowel V position suffix, blocking association This right-edge effect mirror-image Bendjaballah’s (2011) analysis left-edge inflection vowel-initial stems. distribution marking loans provides further supports this analysis.

Split Inflection in Neurolinguistics
Since Pollock’s 1989 paper, much linguistic argumentation has been mounted in favor of the split inflection hypothesis. This paper presents evidence from a neuropsychological angle in support of this hypothesis. Given that agrammatic aphasic patients demonstrate a selective deficit in the syntactic domain, it is tempting to look for impairment patterns that pertain to issues debated in current ...
متن کاملThe Association of Tones in Tashlhiyt Berber
In this study we investigate the nature and distribution of an Intonation Phrase medial H tone in Tashlhiyt Berber. We analyse it as a right edge tone of an Accentual Phrase with a secondary association to a syllable with a sonorant nucleus. In the absence of such a syllable in the target word, H may align with a transitional vocoid, although its location is highly variable. Since these vocoids...
متن کاملPhonological and Morphological Issues in the Distribution of Berber Schwa
1 Introduction The distribution of schwa is similar across most Northern Berber languages. The general pattern in all cases can be seen as the result of two restrictions on the surface forms of the language: one demanding that all consonants be adjacent to a vowel (or, more or less equivalently, that all consonants belong to a maximally CVC syllable), the other demanding that schwa not occur in...
متن کاملUmlaut and Inflection in German
The present paper examines the prosodic constituent Foot as the domain of phonological phenomena in German. Several processes take place in this constituent, such as Glottal Stop Insertion and Final Devoicing, as well as the phenomena that are described below: productive umlaut and infinitive inflection. The status of the trochaic Foot as the unmarked constituent in German is also discussed. Th...
متن کاملImdlawn Tashlhiyt Berber Syllabification is Quantifier-Free∗
Imdlawn Tashlhiyt Berber (ITB) is unusual due to its tolerance of non-vocalic syllabic nuclei. Rule-based and constraint-based accounts of ITB syllabification do not directly address the question of how complex the process is. Model theory and formal logic allow for comparison of complexity across different theories of phonology by identifying the computational power (or expressivity) of lingui...
